Building Churchill

At Churchill Center & School, the Wilson Reading System® is an intensive literacy program for students who have been unable to learn through other teaching strategies. The program is for students who require multisensory language instruction, or who need more intensive, structured literacy instruction due to a language-based learning disability such as dyslexia.

Says Director Sandra Gilligan, “Our students almost become experts in Wilson along the way. They develop an understanding about how they learn and are able to talk about it. They develop that comfort level, that ‘this is part of me; it is part of how I learn. It’s not a bad thing; there are good things about it as well.’ They become aware of the importance of understanding language and why you do multisensory learning, beyond because ‘it’s what the teacher says to do.’”

All Churchill teachers are educated using Wilson Language Training® (WLT). WLT’s mission is to provide quality professional learning and ongoing support so that educators have the skills and tools they need to help their students become fluent, independent readers, who are ready to explore the endless possibilities the world of reading has to offer. Through WLT, our teachers are empowered to achieve literacy with all students in their care.
