Terri’s Tutors, a component of Churchill’s Outreach Program, provides educational support services to school age children recovering from cancer who are experiencing learning problems as a result of their cancer treatment.
It is now generally accepted that central nervous system treatments for childhood cancer can result in significant cognitive impairments and learning problems. It was the dream of one of Churchill’s former teachers, Terri Thornton, to combine her teaching expertise and the insight she gained through her own cancer experience, to tutor young cancer survivors.
To fulfill Terri’s dream, Churchill created a new program, Terri’s Tutors. Using the knowledge and techniques developed by Churchill for use with learning disabled students, the Terri’s Tutors faculty facilitates each child’s academic progress.
Among the services available are individual tutoring and an academic support center. In addition, upon the family’s request, Terri’s Tutors can serve as the student’s advocate and conference with home school personnel.
Services will be provided at Churchill Center & School or a mutually agreeable public location. These services are available at no cost.
Tutors are past and present Churchill faculty as well as other certified teachers who are supervised by Churchill faculty and have completed the Terri’s Tutors training program.
