Student Spotlight – Tia

Tia is currently an 8th grader at Churchill Center & School. Outside of school, Tia is passionate about learning and playing the cello. She is member of the Community Music School of Webster University (CMS).

As an accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and a certified member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the CMS offers outstanding music education and performance opportunities to students of all ages and abilities in the St. Louis area and beyond since it’s founding in 1925. Music faculty includes world-class performers who are also master teachers.

On Sunday, January 21, 2018 Tia performed as part of the CMS String Orchestra including a large cello section, over 25 violinists and a bass player at the Webster University Concert Hall. The Orchestra played music including Procession and Dance by Georg Phillipp Telemann, arranged by J. Cameron Law, Mock Morris, No. 1 from “Room Music Tid-bits” by Percy Aldridge Grainger and arranged by Sandra Dackow and Danse Infernale by Elliot Del Borgo.

We spoke to Tia regarding her passion for the cello.

Churchill:       When did you start learning the cello?

Tia:                  I have been playing since the 5th grade. So for over 3 years now!

Churchill:       How much time per week do you put into playing?

Tia:                  I try to practice very single day for about 45 minutes per day, plus I have a private lesson with my music teacher every Friday evening for at least 45 minutes. On Wednesdays, I play with a conductor and the entire CMS Orchestra at Webster University.

Churchill:       Did playing the cello come naturally to you?

Tia:                  It was initially fun and fairly easy to learn when I started, but as I grow as a musician, the music becomes more and more challenging and demanding. I look forward to getting better and better!

Churchill:       How long do you think you will continue your lessons and playing?

Tia: I hope to continue learning and performing through high school as part of the orchestra. I love playing the cello!

Beyond her passion for the cello, Tia also enjoys competing in lacrosse and is a member of Churchill’s basketball team.

Way to go Tia! We are inspired by your talent and dedication!
