Outreach & Workshops

Churchill Center & School’s Sandra K. Gilligan School Partnerships & Outreach Program is essential in strengthening our mission of fostering greater understanding and support for all people with learning disabilities by training other educators, supporting families, and enlightening the community.

Since the inception of our Community Outreach Program in 1990, more than 37,500 educators, parents, students, and other supporters have been given the opportunity to experience and broaden their understanding of learning disabilities.

We offer Teacher Workshops, Parent Workshops, Student Workshops, Community Service Events, and a Speaker Series. Each one of these programs offers our community a variety of services to recognize learning disabilities and to then equip the participants with strategies and knowledge to offer further assistance.

Multisensory Math: Strategies for Helping All Students Master Essential Concepts

Join Marilyn Zecher for this outstanding hands-on workshop being offered in the St. Louis area for the first time!

Beginning with basic numeracy and quantity awareness, there are specific conceptual horizons which all students must master if they are to succeed in higher math. Place value, multiplication/division and fractions are historically important content milestones where significant numbers of students struggle.

This three-day workshop will offer hands-on, evidence-based strategies for meeting the needs of all students in critical skill areas. One segment will offer strategies for using simple technology to create differentiated instructional materials. The core focus of the workshop will be foundation skills, but algebra readiness standards and links to algebraic procedures for early middle school will be addressed and modeled.

Participants will leave with ideas for teaching a whole class, a small group or an individual learner, especially focusing on multiplication/division and fractions. The workshop is suitable for those who work with all traditional learners, students with learning disabilities, at risk populations and ELL's.

Fee: $500 (includes lunch)
Times: Wednesday, June 7 - Friday, June 9 from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. each day

Marilyn Zecher, M.A., CALT is a nationally certified Academic Language Therapist specializing in applying Orton-Gilligham-based strategies to a variety of content areas. She trains nationally for The Multisensory Training Institute of the Nonprofit Atlantic Seaboard Dyslexia Education Center in Rockville, Maryland and is a part time instructor at Loyola University in Baltimore.
